Hello! Today I’d like to share a card with you that I made using a piece of wrapping paper I saved from a gift. This is a great way to recycle or upcycle your scraps of wrapping paper!
Let the wrapping pattern shine
The wrapping paper in the card shown above is the blue peacock pattern that I used as the background. You can use the wrapping paper just like any other patterned paper. But I love to use it in a way that lets the pattern shine – rather than covering it up.
Add a matte so it isn’t too thin
Most wrapping paper is very thin and delicate, so it can be a bit difficult to work with. That’s why I started this card by cutting a matte from white cardstock, and then adhered my wrapping paper to it. This made working with the wrapping paper a bit easier.
Use minimal elements
To finish off the card, I just added some rick rack, a single stamped element, and a sentiment. Then I adhered the whole thing to a black card base. Easy peasy!
This would be a great way to make some holiday thank you cards!
What about you? Do you save wrapping paper?
Did you save the pretty wrapping papers from your holiday gifts? Do you ever use wrapping paper in projects? How do you use your saved wrapping paper?
Thanks for stopping by!

Just love this, it is so simple but very effective, thanks for sharing
Gift wrap in my house usually has at least three lives-2 for gifts and one for other crafting uses and a final shredding for package stuffing. I often use scraps from card making or some of the printed papers that just don’t seen to work for lining cards, envelopes and tags. Plain gift wrap paper is often attached to a liner before running through an embossing machine so it doesn’t tear.
The other big recycling project I do at this time of year is to a collect used large picture calendars and make them into envelopes.
Hi Anne, This is such a cute card. I’ve actually used wrapping paper on cards before. It’s fun to do that with the scraps & we even had a challenge on Die Cut Divas (a Flickr group I’m involved in). Happy New Year my friend I hope that 2013 is the best yet. Btw your kitties are just way too sweet
Yes I use wrapping paper to make new christmas cards the next xmas. I love being able to upcycle things instead of adding to landfill.
I’m a bit wasteful… paper gets torn off by the family and ends up getting binned… I did manage to save a few pieces that will make it to the cards sometime! Happy New Year!
What a great idea Anne! It never crossed my mind to even do that. Unfortunately it’s too late as my scraps are all in the garbage, but I’ll remember that for next time!
