Hi there!

When we are setting goals, most of us include goals for our work and career and our personal life. But, did you remember to include some artistic goals for yourself?

What do you want out of your art?

Do you want to create a piece that you love so much that you will hang it in your living room for everyone to see? Do you want to have your work in a show? Do you want to attract 3 new collectors this year? Do you want your work published in a magazine? Do you want to sell at least 5 pieces? Do you want to earn a certain amount of money from your art? Do you want to trade artwork with others?

Most artists want something from their art beyond just the satisfaction of creating it. Usually, artists want some sort of recognition or acknowledgment, in the form of having their work displayed, published, or purchased.

Or what about exploring new subject matter or new techniques? Do you want to try a new medium, like acrylic paints? Do you want to start art journaling? Do you want to try a new technique you saw in a magazine or on a DVD?

What is it that you want from your art?

Artists need goals too!

Spend some time thinking about where you would like to take your art in the coming months or years. What direction do you want to go in? What would you like to do or explore along the way? What would you like to do with your art? How do you want it to be received or recognized?

And then translate your ideas into artistic goals for yourself. Write them down. Make them S.M.A.R.T. Keep track of your progress! Setting artistic goals and working towards achieving them is a great way to move your artistic life forward!

Good luck! And thanks for stopping by!

You have excellent points, Anne! For me, the goal is to make others and myself feel happy (a sense of “aw….” )…when they see my work. That is always my goal. Other than that, I’m just happy to create whatever inspires me. Love that when it happens!
